The International Archeological Society had its origins in 1975. Under the original name of “Naples Archeological Club”, a small group of individuals with a shared passion for the ancient ruins in Italy met once a month to discuss their interests and on special occasions organized a trip to specific locations. Some founding members of note were Dr Paul Arthur (lecturer at University of Salerno), Dr Sarah Bisel (physical anthropologist who did the preliminary work on the Herculaneum skeletons), Dr Michael Karris (historian, University of Rome) and Raol Botello (underwater archaeologist) along with others who each brought particular skills, experience and enthusiasm. In the early 1980”s the official name was changed to the “International Archeological Society” and an actual board of officers was instated. By 1994 when Hamish Robertson first became a member, the society had already gone through many transformations. With regular members and scheduled trips on a regular basis, Hamish established an annual Monte Casino trip and the first trip to the Vatican Underground. Also during this time, Andrew Wallace Hadrill began yearly trips to Ercolano or Pompeii. These trips are still very much an educational staple to our annual schedule. Over the years there have been many influential individuals, all of whom added to the progression and evolution of the International Archeological Society. Today we continue to offer a venue of discovery for those wishing to experience the history, archaeology and classical antiquities of Italy.
