Living here in the shadow of Vesuvius has been an epiphany of sorts. With my architectural background, I had been given a generous historical vignette onto such areas as Pompeii and Herculaneum in school. I discovered that this knowledge is a monocular view at best. It is not until you actually have the opportunity to experience those places you've studied that you can truly begin to grasp their significance for they are the living links to our own environments. Italy is an enigmatic palimpsest complete with history, drama, beauty and its mysteries. I've become hopelessly consumed with discovery and found that I'm not alone as there are many others here that share my passion. For those persons, the IAS serves as a forum that allows people to exchange and share information and experiences. This may take the form of a lecture, workshop, tour or maybe a round table discussion. What is important is the exchange of ideas and knowledge. Above all, we celebrate the presence of that little child in all of us. The one that is thrilled to discover and visit new and interesting places. I welcome all who wish to experience the abundance of history, archaeology and culture here. I look forward to a meaningful exchange of ideas, knowledge and experiences with you all.
